Letter From The President

Dear Student,

The prospect for working adults to supplement their formal education has never been better than it is now. A college degree has become a priceless credential for a swiftly increasing number of professions. Unfortunately for many thousands of working adults, the commitments involved in maintaining a career, along with the pressures and weight of family life, form virtually overwhelming obstacles for a return to school to earn the degree they need or desire.

Recognizing this dilemma, Cheshire University grew to offer a wide variety of distance education programmes, which lead to degrees that do not place the usual time and on-campus attendance needs on adult learners.

There are many benefits to studying at home, as thousands of students have discovered. Perhaps one of the most useful benefits is that you can enrol in a degree programme that interests you at any time. There are no on-site classes to attend, no travelling is needed, course work may be completed at your leisure, when it best fits into your schedule, and you receive individualized attention from your instructors for the period of your studies.

Cheshire University is dedicated to offering distance education courses in the most expedient and effectual formats available, in order to afford its' students the opportunity to earn a college degree. As a non-traditional university, our degree programmes have been developed to take into consideration the wealth of knowledge gained through an individual's Life / Work Experiences, and equate it to college level credit. Some additional options utilized by Cheshire to grant college level credit are through credit transfer, curriculum study, proficiency examinations and others.

Throughout history, more learning and teaching has taken place outside a classroom than in what we think of today as the traditional setting.

"Non-traditional" educational programmes have always been slow to be accepted by old style, "traditional" educators with vested interest in traditional higher education. It has been found that there is less and less resistance to new ideas, techniques and educational programmes, such as our degree programmes as we enter the Information Age.

This is likely due to the rapid acceptance by employers, organisations and modern-thinking educators, and growing reception by even the most stringent "traditionalists".

In the next century the world population will reach 10 billion. The challenge of providing education to such a doubled population is formidable for the development of education. For nations, even now, the level of the education of its people is rapidly becoming as important for its prosperity as its natural resources. Francis Bacon said 400 years ago that “knowledge is power”, but that has never been truer than it is today.

The requirement of the future student is greatly different from what traditional education has provided. This has arisen because it is no longer sufficient that all citizens get a sound, basic education before taking up an occupation. In the course of a normal working career, individuals will need to update and renew their knowledge and skills several times. Learning has now become lifelong - not as a choice but as a necessity.

Holding a college degree can dramatically enhance your chances of a prosperous future and lead to exciting careers. Cheshire University will continue to be a leader in the future of education.

Now that you're serious about your education, consider a university that's serious about it too. Cheshire University works!

I look forward to welcoming you as a student of Cheshire University.

Dr. Stephen Charleston Ph.D.
